The Limassol Port is entering a new chapter of development, having secured €18,781,957 in European co-funding through the competitive “Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF) programme of the European Union. Cyprus’s proposal was selected among a total of 265 submitted proposals, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works said on Wednesday.
Upon completion, the port of Limassol’s annual capacity is expected to reach 1,772 ships, making it one of the most important energy and trade hubs in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Ministry highlighted that this project falls within the broader framework of strengthening the infrastructure of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), enhancing Cyprus’s position as a key hub on European and military mobility corridors.
It also noted that the approved project is named IMPACT – Integrated Modernisation for Port Advancement, Clean Energy Transition, and Connectivity. It constitutes a comprehensive intervention aimed at modernising the port, connecting it with green infrastructure, and improving its connectivity.
The Ministry of Transport said that the port expansion, which is part of one of the country’s most significant development projects, includes the construction of new quays, the erection of breakwaters, dredging the approach channel, and utilising the available land area.
Furthermore, it noted that the construction will proceed gradually through individual phases. “Phase A” which is currently underway and has secured the aforementioned co-funding, has a budget of €85 million.
“The Vassiliko Port is evolving into a cornerstone of geostrategic importance for Cyprus and the wider region, combining commercial, energy, military, and environmental potential within an ambitious yet realistic plan with a European dimension,” it added.
