Thousands of rockets mark Easter celebration in Chios

Thousands of homemade rockets lit up the night sky in the village of Vrontados on the eastern Aegean island of Chios late on Holy Saturday, as the island’s traditional “rocket war” marked the Orthodox Easter celebration.

Rival groups from two local parishes, Panagia Erithiani and Agios Markos, began preparations early in the evening, with test launches shortly after 9 p.m.

The display peaked just before midnight during the Resurrection service, when volleys of rockets illuminated the sky in a dramatic spectacle.

The centuries-old custom remains one of Greece’s most distinctive Easter traditions, attracting thousands of visitors to Chios each year eager to witness the unique celebration.
