Trump highlights bilateral defense ties in Greek Independence Day proclamation

US President Donald Trump highlighted the military cooperation between Washington and Athens in his proclamation for Greek Independence Day, calling it a cornerstone of stability.

“The permanent presence of naval forces in Souda Bay and bilateral training events enhance warfighting capabilities and reflect our mutual commitment to joint military cooperation as a cornerstone of security and stability in Europe,” the proclamation read, adding that Greece is one of the United States’ oldest friends, strategic partners, and a valued NATO ally.

President Trump signed the proclamation during the annual White House reception marking March 25, amid applause from Greek Americans and prominent members of the diaspora.

The statement also references ongoing efforts to strengthen US-Greece relations across several key strategic areas.

“We appreciate the support of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in our economic and diplomatic partnership as we forge opportunities for collaboration in key sectors including energy, science, technology, shipping, logistics, and defense,” the statement notes.

President Trump also praised the Greek-American community, emphasizing its wide-ranging influence and contributions to American society.

“Today, across the United States, generations of Greek Americans infuse our neighborhoods and communities with a rich legacy of cultural traditions, and a heritage of family, faith, hospitality, and civic responsibility,” the proclamation read.
