UN top official to visit Cyprus

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the head of Peace Operations for the UN will pay a four-day visit to Cyprus, starting on Thursday.

During Wednesday’s international press briefing at UN Headquarters, in New York, the Spokesperson for the Secretary‑General, Stéphane Dujarric, reading a statement said Lacroix would visit Cyprus after wrapping up his trip to Russia. He would be heading off to visit the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus on Thursday. During his four-day visit, Lacroix will meet with representatives of the two communities in the island.

The UN official is also scheduled to meet with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and Head of the Mission, Elizabeth Spehar, and Mission personnel. He will visit various key locations where the Mission is deployed along the buffer zone.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
