US Air Force advances AI fighter program, attracting Greek interest

The US Air Force has taken a major step toward deeper integration of human pilots and autonomous systems in combat, awarding contracts for its first Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program to General Atomics and Anduril.

Anduril, valued at $61 billion, is currently the fastest-growing US defense technology company, focusing on autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. Its subsidiary Shield AI will develop the software backbone for the CCA fleet, including the “Hivemind” collective intelligence system.

The development carries particular Greek interest. Shield AI has recently signed a cooperation memorandum with the Greek defense group EFA and is preparing to establish offices in Athens to support work on advanced autonomy software. In parallel, senior Hellenic Air Force leadership has expressed interest in CCA technology both as a potential user and future co-producer.

The US Air Force contracts cover two prototype aircraft: General Atomics’ YFQ-42A and Anduril’s YFQ-44A. These systems are designed to operate as “loyal wingmen” alongside 5th and 6th generation fighter jets, extending the reach and effectiveness of manned aircraft.

Equipped with artificial intelligence, CCAs are intended to support a wide range of missions, including air-to-air combat, ground strikes, electronic warfare, and intelligence gathering, and targeting. Their design also allows them to be deployed in high-risk scenarios to protect pilot assets.

The US Air Force ultimately envisions a fleet of roughly 1,000 collaborative drones, with initial deliveries of around 150 units expected before the end of the decade.

Just months ago, Lieutenant General Dimosthenis Grigoriadis, Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, noted interest in acquiring cooperative drone systems. Greece is also set to procure 20 F-35A fighters, with an option for 20 additional aircraft. CCAs could potentially operate alongside these platforms, significantly enhancing their operational capabilities.
