Athens unveils strategy for diaspora unity

In an effort to modernize and strengthen Greece’s ties with its diaspora, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled a comprehensive plan on Wednesday aimed at enhancing services for Greeks abroad.

Presented at the Foreign Ministry, the plan outlines six ambitious goals designed to deepen Greece’s engagement with its global community, while encouraging young Greeks to consider returning home.

The primary objectives include modernizing consular services through digitization, fostering new organizational structures within the diaspora, and building networks to promote Greece’s image abroad.

Another major focus is preserving Greek heritage by promoting language, history, and cultural education, especially among younger generations.

The initiative also aims to strengthen bonds with Orthodox institutions, which serve as key cultural links between the homeland and its expatriates.

A practical step toward this strategy is a job fair in Dusseldorf on December 14, co-hosted by the Foreign Ministry and Greece’s Public Employment Service, aimed at informing Greek nationals in Germany about employment opportunities back in Greece.

In addition, expedited passport processing for Greeks abroad is slated to improve access to essential services, with digital solutions planned to reduce wait times and costs significantly.

The Foreign Ministry is also advancing “scientific diplomacy” initiatives, creating academic partnerships to link Greek universities with leading research centers around the world.

Through these collaborations, the government hopes to harness the expertise of Greek scientists abroad, maximizing the intellectual contributions of its global diaspora.

In presenting the strategy, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis highlighted the significance of Greece’s large expatriate population, noting that of the world’s cities with over 100,000 Greek residents, seven are outside Greece.

“This global presence,” he emphasized, “is our great strength.”
