According to a Foreign Ministry press release issued on Wednesday, during the private audience that followed, Ambassador Kyriakou conveyed to King Frederik the warm greetings of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.  He referred also to the excellent level of bilateral relations between Cyprus and Denmark and underlined his commitment to work towards further strengthening the ties between the two countries.

It is also noted that Ambassador Kyriakou  briefed King Frederik on the latest developments in the Cyprus ισσθε and the efforts of President Christodoulides for the resumption of negotiations.

In this context, he expressed the gratitude of the γovernment of the Republic of Cyprus for the service of Danish soldiers in the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).  Ambassador Kyriakou also referred to Cyprus’ stabilising role in the region, with special reference to the Amalthea plan for the delivering of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

It is noted that King Frederik reciprocated his warm greetings to President Christodoulides and referred to Cyprus’ positive role as a pillar of peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Finally, he also expressed his satisfaction for the excellent bilateral relations between Cyprus and Denmark, and his wish for their continuous strengthening.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
