Greece’s Maria Sakkari staged a remarkable comeback from a set and 4-0 down to defeat American Robin Montgomery and reach the second round of the US Open.
Sakkari, a former world No 3 who is now ranked 32nd, appeared headed for an early exit as the 22-year-old Montgomery controlled the match in its opening stages. But the Greek fought back to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The 31-year-old will face Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva next. Starodubtseva reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Ella Seidel.
