Greece’s Air Force has identified the two pilots who died when their F-4E Phantom II fighter jet crashed during an air show in Tanagra, north of Athens, on Saturday.
They are Major Ioannis Blesias, 40, and Captain Dimitrios Petrou, 37.
According to the official statement from the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) General Staff, the accident occurred at 2.55 p.m. local time, when the F-4E, assigned to the 338 Squadron of the 117th Combat Wing, crashed approximately three nautical miles (5.6 km) southeast of the 114th Combat Wing at Tanagra.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has declared a three-day mourning period in the Armed Forces until September 7.
The causes of the accident are being investigated by a competent committee of the Air Force.
