ZOOM IN-Giannis Tsilfoglou: The Greek Community of Borås and the Struggle Against Dictatorship
Mr. Tsilfoglou’s life in Sweden reflects the journey of a generation of Greeks who built new lives abroad while remaining deeply connected to their homeland. Through his involvement and presidency of the Greek Community of Borås, he became part of an important chapter in the history of the Greek diaspora. During the years of the military dictatorship in Greece (1967–1974), the community served not only as a centre of cultural identity and social solidarity but also as a platform for democratic expression and resistance. Its members faced difficult decisions, supported political refugees and worked to inform Swedish society about developments in Greece. His experiences also highlight the importance of cooperation among Greek communities throughout Sweden and their contribution to establishing a united voice for Hellenism. Looking back, Mr. Tsilfoglou shares memories of courage, responsibility and solidarity, preserving a legacy for future generations.
