Defying gravity, 2 astronauts lift spellbound crowd to the stars

Under the dome of the Eugenides Foundation’s new digital planetarium, an audience was invited to travel to the stars on Thursday by two people who defy gravity in practice.

Samantha Cristoforetti, a European Space Agency astronaut and the first European woman to command the International Space Station, and Adrianos Golemis, a Greek astronaut preparing for his own mission in 2027.

The event, “Pioneers in Space,” was organized by Kathimerini and the foundation, with support from the TITAN group.

Golemis, who is from Larissa, recalled visiting the planetarium on a school trip in 2005. “I think I was the only one who didn’t fall asleep,” he said, to laughter. “Whether you believe it or not, there is a way to fulfill our dreams,” he said.

Cristoforetti, who has flown twice to space for six months each time, said: “When the rocket finally launches and you are on your way, you feel enormous joy.”
