Dendias courts Silicon Valley ideas

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias visited Stanford University as part of a trip focused on military modernization and technological cooperation.

At Stanford, he met with leading academics, including Greek professors Christos Kozyrakis, Nicholas Bambos and Vasilis Syrgkanis, receiving briefings on advances in automation, robotics, and secure management of operational data for defense applications. The discussions included what officials described as a productive exchange of views on Greece’s defense innovation ecosystem under the “Agenda 2030” reform plan.

Dendias also participated in talks at Stanford’s Hoover Institution with researchers, including former NATO deputy secretary-general Rose Gottemoeller, addressing international and regional security concerns and challenges facing the European Union and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Later, he toured the unmanned aircraft manufacturer Matternet, where CEO Andreas Raftopoulos demonstrated the capabilities of its drone systems. He also met with expatriates in California working in high tech, research, energy and finance, discussing ways in which the Greek diaspora could support national defense innovation initiatives.

A working dinner followed with California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and Hoover fellow Markos Kounalakis.
