The maintenance and upgrading project of the Famagusta Gate, in Nicosia, will be completed by the end of the year, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou said on Wednesday, after visiting the monument.
In statements to the press after visiting the site, she said that the Famagusta Gate is one of the most important monuments of Nicosia, with a long history dating back to the 16th century.
Noting that the Department of Antiquities has undertaken the maintenance works of the monument, which were completed in 2023, she said that now the second phase of the restoration project will begin.
The goal, she said, is to complete the work so that the monument can be visited and can be used for other purposes, as it was the case in the past.
“This will be completed by the end of the year, so that we can also use it during the Cyprus EU Presidency” she concluded.
