Greece and Serbia discuss security and defense in Belgrade meeting

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias met with his Serbian counterpart Bratislav Gacic in Belgrade Tuesday to discuss regional security and bilateral defense relations.

Following their meeting, Dendias emphasized the strategic importance of the defense ties between the two countries, which were strengthened by a 2019 agreement. “We discussed how to reinforce these relations and organize more joint exercises in the future,” he said.

Dendias thanked Serbia for its assistance during Greece’s wildfires in August and for recent support during fires in the northern region of Kavala. He expressed a desire to connect the defense industries of both countries.

Dendias also reiterated Greece’s support for the NATO-led peacekeeping Kosovo Force (KFOR) and the need for strong neighborly relations in the Western Balkans. Additionally, he praised Serbia’s decision to prioritize its path towards European Union membership, stating, “Of course, we welcome Serbia’s strategic choice to make the path to the European Union a priority.”

In a related post on X, Dendias wrote: “In the context of Greece-Serbia discussions on the cooperation possibilities of our defensive ecosystems, I visited the Military Technical Institute of Serbia (VTI), where Deputy Minister of Defense Dr Nenad Miloradovic kindly gave me a guided tour. The importance of developing innovations for defensive technologies was confirmed yet again.”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic also welcomed Dendias, highlighting the importance of the friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries. The visit concluded with a lunch hosted by Gacic.
