Greece has ranked second worldwide among the preferred holiday destinations in this year’s 38th annual Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards. Japan came in first, and Greece was followed by Portugal, Italy, Spain and Turkey.
This is a huge distinction, as it came from a total of 757,109 readers’ votes in this year’s survey by the global tourism magazine.
There are also great individual distinctions for Greek hotels, islands and cities. Athens won the award for the 12th best European city, based on overall visitor satisfaction, while Naxos was named the best island in Europe. In the same category, of islands, Crete follows in eighth place, above Corfu (10th), Rhodes (11th), Skiathos (12th), Mykonos (14th), Folegandros (17th) and Santorini (18th).
In the field of hospitality, the survey separated resorts from hotels and Greece excelled in both categories. The top 50 resorts worldwide include 10 Greek units, led by Porto Zante Villas & Spa on Zakynthos, and the top 50 hotels include 10 Greek ones, led by the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens, while Euphoria Retreat at Mystras, in the Peloponnese, was voted the sixth-best spa destination in Europe.
