A number of Greek political figures have taken to social media to welcome Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.
Panos Kammenos, the former leader of Independent Greeks which formed a government coalition with leftist SYRIZA from 2015 to 2019, tweeted “Make Greece great again,” in a clear reference to Trump’s election slogan.
In the final days of the US election campaign, Kammenos, who served as defense minister under Alexis Tsipras, appealed to Greek Americans to back the Republican candidate.
“With absolute responsibility and knowledge of the past, I call on the entire Greek community in the USA to support the candidacy of President Donald Trump. It is in the interest of Hellenism, of the end to war-like involvement in our region and of our homeland,” he tweeted on October 23.
“What happens now that all the systemic parties [New Democracy], PASOK and SYRIZA put all their money on Kamala but Trump won? Only Greek Solution was for Trump and for peace in Greece! That’s why we have told you that they are irrelevant and dangerous for the country!” he posted on X.
Also enthused by Trump’s return to the White House was Afroditi Latinopoulou, who holds a seat in the European Parliament for her Voice of Reason party.
“They tried to assassinate him politically. They tried to actually assassinate him. They tried to silence him. But the light of reason defeated the darkness of paranoia of the woke agenda, of illegal immigration and of benefits. Congratulations, @realDonaldTrump.”
