Polls anticipate Meloni’s victory two weeks ahead of Italian elections

Voting intention polls published this Friday, the last ones allowed before the Italian elections on September 25, show a clear advantage for the center-right alliance around Brothers of Italy, the formation of Giorgia Meloni.

The polls have been published by the country’s major media such as ‘Il Corriere della Sera’, ‘La Repubblica’ and the SkyTG24 television channel and indicate that the alliance would have about 45 percent of the support, while Brothers of Italy would consolidate as the most important party.

This support could lead the alliance of conservative parties to win more than half of the seats, since the Italian electoral system favors large blocs. One third of the seats in the two chambers are decided in single-member constituencies, where citizens vote for a single candidate and the one who receives the most support is the one who wins the seat.

A result such as the one predicted by the polls could give great power to this bloc, since the support of two thirds of the chamber is enough to be able to modify the Constitution without holding a referendum.

This is one of the objectives of Meloni’s formation, which has already stated that it wants to change the current parliamentary system for a presidential one.

The Italian center-left, led by the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, wants to avoid this constitutional modification, although the scenario drawn by the polls gives them little chance of winning.

Pollsters have emphasized that voting intentions can change a lot in the two weeks prior to the election, since many voters are undecided and a 65 percent turnout is expected, which would mark an all-time low.

After the collapse of Mario Draghi’s technocrat-heavy government, Italians are tired of politics. Italy had to call elections after the Five Star Movement, the majority party after the 2018 elections, withdrew its support for the prime minister.

Giuseppe Conte’s party has risen again in the polls and is positioned in third place behind Brothers of Italy and the Democratic Party.
