Heavy rainfall is affecting Cyprus since the early hours of Monday in many areas, especially the capital Nicosia.
Heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning has made roads especially slippery, according to the Meteorological Service which has issued a new thunderstorm warning valid from last night until today late afternoon.
It said from 2230 last night until 1900 on Monday, isolated heavy thunderstorms are expected to affect mainly the south part of the island at times.
Rain rates, it added, are expected to range between 35 and 50 millimeters per hour while hail is also likely.
Monday’s weather report said low barometric pressure which is concentrated south-west of the island is gradually weakening however continues to affect the region.
Today the weather will be partly cloudy with local rain and isolated storms which might produce hail, especially on the south and south-west area where weather conditions will be worse. Winds will be mainly south-easterly moderate, four beaufort and locally in the south-west to northern coastal areas reaching strong, five beaufort. The sea will be slight to moderate locally on the north coast. Temperatures will rise to 24 degrees inland and on the coasts and 11 over the mountains.
Tonight, it will be partly cloudy to cloudy at times with local rain and a chance of storms over the south-west coast. Winds will be easterly to south-easterly light, three beaufort and the sea calm to slight. Temperatures will fall to 17 C inland and on the coasts and ten over the mountains.
