The Greek men’s national basketball team has narrowly defeated (93-89 in overtime) the Czech Republic away and qualified to Eurobasket 2025 with its fourth win in five games, and a game to spare.
Being without several top-pick players, but strengthened with some of Greece’s Euroleague stars, the team of coach Vassilis Spanoulis had to work very hard to match its Czech hosts.
It would have actually lost Friday’s game were it not for a Vassilis Toliopoulos triple just two seconds from the end that forced overtime, during which the Greeks were superior and won by four in the end.
Toliopoulos scored 26 points, including five three-pointers.
In its final qualification group game Greece will host the Netherlands in Patra on Monday.
This year’s Eurobasket will take place in Cyprus, Latvia, Poland and Finland from August 27 to September 14.
Greece will be in Cyprus’ pool and face the host in its opening game.
NBA super star Giannis Antetokounmpo has expressed his desire to play for Greece once again this summer.
