2 dead in fire on Salamina island

Firefighters battling a wildfire on the island of Salamina have come across two bodies near where the fire started Sunday, in the seaside settlement of Peristeria, in the southern part of the island.

The firefighters also evacuated four persons with burns, apparently not very serious, and transported them to the local First Aid station, the Fire Service said.

An elderly person has been evecuated from his home in the village of Kaki Vigla, over 8 kilometers to the northeast of Peristeria.

The Coast Guard stands ready to make more evacuations by sea, in necessary, authorities said.

There are 192 firefighters on the ground, along to nine units of the Fire Service’s Special Forest Operations force, volunteers, 32 fire engines, 6 firefighting planes and 8 helicopters, the Fire Service said.
