GREECE
Ministry announces Messinia archaeological site upgrade

The Culture Ministry has announced a €500,000 project to restore and enhance the Peristeria Archaeological Site in Messinia, southern Greece.

Funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the initiative includes preserving Mycenaean tholos tombs, improving visitor facilities, and addressing structural issues.

The Peristeria site, 8 kilometers from Kyparissia, was a prominent Mycenaean settlement (1680-1180 BCE) and also features Roman-era ruins.

Key priorities include stabilizing tombs affected by water damage and upgrading paths for accessibility, including ramps and platforms for disabled visitors.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni highlighted the project’s aim to protect these historical monuments and improve their visibility, integrating Peristeria into Messinia’s cultural map.

Plans include upgraded visitor entry facilities, new buildings for ticketing, information, restrooms, and shaded gathering areas.
