Athens views a planned gas pipeline from Greece to Ukraine as a strategic choice, said Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou on Tuesday in Washington DC.
Speaking at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, Papastavrou said that the Vertical Corridor is “not just an energy project, it is a strategic choice,” as part of a broader discussion on transatlantic gas security.
The project “strengthens energy security, expands Europe’s options and substantially elevates Greece’s position on the energy map,” added the minister.
He said that “Greece laid the foundations for the Vertical Corridor,” adding that cooperation “with Chevron, with ExxonMobil and with the Vertical Corridor [means] our country grows stronger.”
He said the project will bring “more investments, more jobs and more resources for the Greek economy.”
The Vertical Corridor is a strategic energy initiative linking Greece with southeastern and central Europe through a network of natural gas pipelines and infrastructure that enables the flow of gas, particularly US liquefied natural gas (LNG), from Greek terminals to create a north‑south gas transport axis through Ukraine that enhances European supply diversification and gives Greece increased geopolitical influence in regional energy markets.
