Athens responds to Ankara’s claims over Turkey–Libya maritime deal

Greek diplomatic sources responded to comments by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, which criticized Greece and the Republic of Cyprus over their stance on the Turkey–Libya maritime zone memorandum.

As the sources note, international law must be upheld in its entirety and it cannot be invoked selectively.

“Practices such as refusing to sign the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, adopted by 168 countries, overturning centuries-old arrangements at world heritage monuments, or threatening war in response to the exercise of rights derived from international law do not allow for lectures,” the sources stated.

“Greece will consistently uphold international law and good neighborly relations. But this must apply to all,” they added.

On Saturday, the spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement in response to the conclusions of the European Union Summit, which criticized the Turkey–Libya maritime zone delimitation agreement.

He described the Greek and Cypriot positions as maximalist and contrary to international law, insisting that the 2019 Turkey–Libya memorandum fully complies with international law.

A similar response came from the government of eastern Libya based in Benghazi, led by Osama Hamad, who also stated that the agreement with Turkey is consistent with international law.
