Government under fire over controversial House vote

The ruling New Democracy party faces criticism after a controversial parliamentary vote Wednesday that blocked preliminary investigations into two former agriculture ministers implicated in a major EU subsidy fraud scandal.

The opposition demanded an inquiry into European Public Prosecutor’s Office findings implicating former agriculture ministers Makis Voridis and Lefteris Avgenakis in the OPEKEPE agricultural subsidy scandal. PASOK’s proposal sought an investigation into potential breach of trust causing damages exceeding €120,000.

Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis defended its tactics, arguing the majority remained in Parliament while the opposition “withdrew from a proposal it had submitted itself.”

The controversy centered on 75 lawmakers voting by postal ballot, which opposition parties called unprecedented. Government statistics showed New Democracy used postal voting least, at 22%, compared to opposition parties ranging from 27% to 55%.

Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis defended proceedings, stating constitutional requirements were met.

In a secret ballot, 83 lawmakers rejected investigation proposals. Government sources indicated a preference for appearing damaged over risking potential defeat on the sensitive corruption allegations.
