Greece eyes role as CO2 hub

The foundations for Greece’s emergence as an energy hub, not only in the natural gas and electricity sectors but also in the capture, transport and storage of carbon dioxide, are being laid with the new institutional framework passed by Parliament and the investment initiatives of large business groups in the country.

The characteristics and prospects of the new activity opening up for Greece were presented at the Industrial Carbon Management Forum organized in Athens by the European Commission in collaboration with the Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company (EDEYEP).

“Our country has all the conditions to develop into a regional CO2 transport hub, connecting the Southern, Central and Eastern Mediterranean with appropriate and safe geological storage facilities,” said EDEYEP CEO Aristophanis Stefatos. “Our vision is for Greece to operate as a stable partner in collaborations with Italy, the Balkan countries and the Eastern Mediterranean, such as Egypt.”
