Trump’s tariff threat rattles Greek wine market

Greek winemakers are bracing for potential disruptions after US President Donald Trump threatened a 200% tariff on European alcoholic beverages, including wines.

Ηoping to avoid being affected, Greek producers are taking precautionary steps to secure larger orders before any new tariffs are implemented.

Sofia Perpera, advisor to the Greek Wine Association (SEO), said “the US is a key market for Greek wine. We’ve invested heavily, and the return is paying off.”

Greek wine exports to the US total €19 million, with an average export price of €7 per kilogram, significantly higher than in Germany.

Winemakers are rushing to finalize orders before April, when tariffs could take effect. Stelios Boutaris, a prominent winemaker, said “all summer orders are being moved forward to avoid tariffs.”

Angelos Iatridis of Alpha Estate noted that “orders are unusually large for this time of year.” He remains hopeful, believing that Greek wines will remain competitive due to their favorable price-to-quality ratio, even if tariffs are imposed.
