STORRS, CT – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center for Hellenic Studies Paideia at the University of Connecticut (UConn) campus in Storrs moved the annual Greek Independence celebration to September 24.

As in the previous 26 years, the Greek flag was raised over the Connecticut State House March 23-30. The tentative program for the celebration includes a scholarly conference for the 200th Anniversary of Greek Independence.

During this long weekend September 24-26, the Center will also celebrate the opening to the public of the Spartan Museum and the open-air authentic Greek theater “Alexander the Great.” A scholarly conference for the 2500th Anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae is also scheduled for that weekend.

Though it is hard to predict how this September will be, the Center is preparing for all the September 24-26 activities. Official invitations will be sent sometime in June from UConn President Dr. Thomas Katsouleas.

Hellenic Studies Paideia President Ilias Tomazos thanked all those who have supported the Center and helped make the September 24-26 celebrations possible through their love of Greek culture, America, and the youth of our community.

He noted that there is a long list of supporters from Connecticut, from across the U.S. and from Greece.
