Konstantinos Kakaris counting on Greek Australian support at Water Polo World Cup

Greek water polo international Konstantinos Kakaris says wearing the blue and white cap remains the greatest privilege of his career as Greece prepares to compete at the World Cup in Sydney, Australia this month.

Speaking to The Greek Herald ahead of the tournament, Kakaris said the entire squad is eager to take the world stage and is particularly looking forward to the support of the Greek Australian community.

“We are all incredibly excited to compete at the World Cup,” he said.

“Representing Greece at this tournament, and at any international competition, is a tremendous honour for all of us.”

The World Cup will also mark Kakaris’ first visit to Australia, making the tournament even more memorable.

“We are really looking forward to playing in front of the Greek community in Australia, and we are confident that Greek Australians will be there to support us,” he said.

“It will be my first time visiting Australia, and I’m sure I’m going to love it.”

United in pursuit of success

Kakaris said Greece enters the tournament with confidence, built on the close bond shared by the playing group.

“The atmosphere within the team is fantastic,” he said.

“We are a very close-knit group, fully prepared to give everything we have and fight for every victory.”

He said every player understands the responsibility that comes with representing Greece on the international stage.

“For me, and for all my teammates, wearing the Greek national jersey is the highest honour,” Kakaris said.

“We know the responsibility that comes with representing our country, and we are determined to make Greece proud.”

A message for the next generation

As one of Greece’s leading water polo players, Kakaris also had a message for young athletes hoping to one day follow in his footsteps.

“To all the young players who dream of one day wearing the Greek national colours, my message is simple: never stop believing in your dreams,” he said.

“With hard work, dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.”

With the World Cup about to begin, Kakaris and his teammates will be hoping to reward the support of Greek Australians with a strong campaign, while inspiring the next generation of players both in Greece and across the diaspora.
