Two Greek scientists from the Technical University of Crete will participate in a research mission to Antarctica for the first time, state broadcaster ERT reports.
Their mission involves conducting two experiments to study the effects of isolation and extreme weather conditions on the physical and mental health of individuals participating in such expeditions.
“The goal of the Hellenic Polar Society is to encourage authorities to support these efforts so that the Greek flag may one day fly in Antarctica,” said the president of the Hellenic Polar Society and a retired Vice Admiral of the Hellenic Navy Simeon Konstantinidis. He highlighted that while Greece has a wealth of scientific talent, many researchers seek opportunities abroad due to limited resources at home.
Although the exact date of the mission has not been disclosed, it is expected to occur during Antarctica’s summer, which lasts from October to February.
