BOSTON – On Sunday, October 24, 2021 the Greek-American Community of Boston and New England will celebrate the Greek national holiday known as ‘OXI’ DAY, marking the events of October 28, 1940. The celebration this year will be dedicated to the Greek women who have given so much for Greece’s freedom.
The celebration is organized by the Federation of Greek-American Associations of New England under the presidency of Vasillios Kafkas. Events will begin at 10 AM with a doxology and a trisagion at the church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Cambridge for the repose of the souls those who have fallen heroically for the liberation of the motherland, Greece.
At 2:30 PM there will be a guided tour of the Exhibition dedicated to the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution that began in 1821 in the corridors of the Maliotis cultural Center of Hellenic College-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, and at 3:00 PM the event celebrating October 28, 1940 will begin in the amphitheater of the Maliotis Center. The keynote speaker will be Constantine Arvanitopoulos, former Minister of Education of Greece and the Constantine Karamanlis Chair in Hellenic and European Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.
Kafkas told The National Herald that, “this year’s celebration will be dedicated to ‘the Greek Woman’ – the mother, the grandmother, the sister… The women who gave and undertook struggles for their children, their families, society, the Homeland, including the heroines of 1940, 1821 and all the wars and struggles for freedom and the family.”
He also said that “due to the coronavirus, the protocol for COVID-19 will be followed. Everyone entering Maliotis Center must wear a mask. Entry will only be allowed for up to 80 people.
